Amlaki (scientific name: Phyllanthus emblica) is a herbaceous fruit of Phyllanthus genus of Phyllanthus family. Its name is ‘Amlaka’ in Sanskrit language. English name is amla or Indian gooseberry, Malacca tree, emblic myrobalan, or emblic, myrobalan. They are hairless or hairy deciduous trees.

Morphology of Goose Berry

Amalaki trees can be 8 to 18 meters tall, with deciduous leaves. The light green, compound leaves are short, 1/2 inch long. The light green female and male flowers are borne on the same plant. Fruits are light green or yellow and spherical, less than 1/2 inch in diameter. The wood is bright red or brownish red. It is found in almost all regions of Bangladesh. The tree bears fruit at the age of 4/5 years. Fruits are available from August – November. Amalaki is propagated by seeds. Rainy season is the best time to plant seedlings.
