Malabar Spinach (Basella alba) is a climbing plant. The leaves and stems of the pui plant are eaten as a vegetable, so it is commonly referred to as pui shak. Pui is a perennial tropical tree belonging to the family Basellaceae. It is cultivated everywhere in Bangladesh, West Bengal, Assam and Tripura. Its bhaji is the favorite companion food of the people of all these areas.
It is a soft branched plant. Its fleshy vines can quickly grow up to 10 meters in length. Its thick, rather succulent, hortan-shaped leaves have a mild fragrance. Leaves are smooth, slightly slippery. A genus of red-rose (Basella alba ‘Rubra’) has reddish-purple mature stems known as red rose stems. Peony flowers are white or red. The fruit is like a pea. Ripe fruits are purple in color. Puisha is rich in vitamins A, B, C, calcium, iron, folic acid, potassium, zinc.
