Cultivated Countries

Sugarcane has probably been cultivated in its ancient home of Asia since time immemorial. Currently, sugarcane is cultivated in about 100 countries of the world. However, the main sugarcane-producing countries are India, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Barbados, China, Cuba, Mexico, Egypt, Jamaica, Peru, South Africa, USA, Hawaii, Florida and Louisiana.

Cultivated areas in Bangladesh

Although sugarcane is grown more or less everywhere in Bangladesh, Chittagong, Kumilsna, Sylhet, Dhaka, Faridpur, Jamalpur, Kishoreganj, Tangail, Jessore, Kushtia, Bogra, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Pabna and Rajshahi are the main sugarcane growing areas. Bangladesh Sugarcane Research and Training Institute has developed about 30 improved varieties of high yielding sugarcane.

Sugarcane production volume

An average of 7.3 million tons of sugarcane is produced in Bangladesh every year on 0.43 acres of land. The country’s 15 sugar mills produce an average of 1.5-1.99 lakh tonnes of sugar annually, the rest being used for molasses and food. In 2007, 3 more companies are coming up privately to produce sugar – of which Meghna Group is said to have an annual production capacity of 6 lakh tonnes. The annual sugar demand of Bangladesh is 10 to 12 lakh tons of which one and a half lakh tons is produced in the country. About 85-87% of the total sugar present in sugarcane can be collected in the modern sugar mills of the world. It is possible to collect 60-70 percent sugar in the sugar mills of Bangladesh. In this country only 7-8 kg of sugar is produced from every 100 kg of sugarcane.
